5 Writing Podcasts You Need to Know About

writing podcasts

Millions of people listen to podcasts every day. If you are a writer, you may be interested in finding one that teaches you a thing or two about the craft. Then again, maybe you just want to hear how other writers got published or how they fit writing into their busy schedule.

For me, it’s all about finding a little inspiration. In any case, these five podcasts are my go-to when I need a writer’s pick me up. Great fun, great content. You’re welcome.

1 — The Sh** No One Tells You About Writing

The Hosts: Bianca Marais (@BiancaM_author) — Author, Carly Watters (@carlywatters) — Literary Agent, CeCe Lyra (@ceciliaclyra) — Literary Agent

What It Covers: If you were going to listen to just one podcast, this is the one. Listeners have their queries reviewed by literary agents (find out what agents are looking for), get recommendations about book comps (see where you fit in the marketplace), hear interviews from authors across a number of genres (find inspiration), and learn all about the writer’s life and the publishing world.

Why I Like It: The most well-rounded of all the podcasts, The Sh** No One Tells You About Writing is a dream for new writers and established writers alike. The hosts are animated and well-versed in the field. I am so familiar with their style by now, they feel like family. I’m right at home.

2 — Story Nerd

The Hosts: Melanie Hill (@melaniehillauth) — Author, Valerie Francis (@valerie_francis) — Author

What It Covers: This podcast is for novelists but brilliantly teaches you how to build a story by looking at another medium — movies. It’s a lot easier to watch a movie than to read a new book every week! Melanie Hill and Valerie Francis tackle an aspect of story writing and highlight what they learned in that week’s film. From Back to the Future to Star Wars, you’ll be surprised by what works and what doesn’t. Plus, you’ll enjoy some great movies along the way.

Why I Like It: I am an author and a movie lover. For me, this podcast really is the best of both worlds. The playful banter between the two hosts (Valerie and I always seem to be on the same page), the helpful tips, the fresh perspectives, the motivational speeches, Story Nerd is a delight on every level.

3 — Fiction Writing Made Easy

The Host: Savannah Gilbo (savannahgilbo.com) — Developmental Editor

What It Covers: If you’re looking for a writing tutorial, this is the podcast for you. Savannah Gilbo uses her editorial experience to coach authors as they write their novels and navigate the publishing world. Her podcast episodes vary in length from 10 minutes up to an hour, delivering content in easily digestible bullet points. In some cases, she even dissects chapters from well-known books!

Why I Like It: Savannah knows her stuff. Better yet, she gets to the heart of the matter without all the sugar coating. Your time is valuable and she knows it. The practical tips she gives are worth their weight in gold.

4 — The Story Blender Podcast

The Host: Steven James (stevenjames.net) — Author

What It Covers: This podcast reminds you that “the art of the story is all in the blend”. Every week Steven James interviews an author about their work and their writing process. Episodes range from 45 minutes to an hour and highlight how people have come to success in their writing careers.

Why I Like It: I have a soft spot for Steven. Yes, I love his thrillers (The Bower Files are riveting) but he led a workshop at the very first writing conference I ever attended. He is a mild-mannered, knowledgeable, and uplifting speaker who knows how to get writers writing.

5 — Mom’s Don’t Have Time to Read Books

The Host: Zibby Owens (zibbyowens.com, @zibbyowens) — Author and Founder/CEO of Zibby Books

What It Covers: Author and business owner Zibby Owens interviews writers across every genre but does it in a bite-sized podcast that won’t eat into your schedule. In about 30 minutes a day (yes, this is a DAILY podcast!), you hear about the latest publications and even more about the authors themselves.

Why I Like It: As a mom, I identify with the daily grind. Finding time to do anything for YOU can feel near impossible at times! Zibby’s podcast keeps it light while keeping your finger on the pulse of what’s happening in writing today. She talks about so many great books, my TBR is ever-expanding!
