Catwoman Lived to the Nines

Selina Kyle was a cat-loving single woman who lived alone in a small apartment. Her only real friend was an alley cat who came through the window every night for a saucer of milk.

From Cat Lady to Catwoman

When she caught her boss involved in some criminal activity at work, Selina’s life changed in an instant. He pushed her out the window and she fell several stories into the alley below.

She died but thanks to the alley cats that resurrected her, she got nine lives of her own. As simple and complicated as that, Selina took on a new persona as Catwoman. She designed a black catsuit and attached metal claws to her fingertips to celebrate the occasion.

The question is whether she would use her newfound power for good or evil. With Catwoman, it hurts so bad it’s good.

Catwoman’s #MeToo Moment

As the cat lady, Selina was shy and repressed. As Catwoman, she was expressive and unafraid. She oozed sexuality and flaunted her purrfect self in a skin-tight suit. A woman who knew what she wanted, she looked to make a connection with billionaire Bruce Wayne.

That is where things got interesting. Neither knew the other’s secret identity. Sparks flew between the two, in and out of costume. As civilians, there was a romantic attraction. As heroes and villains, they turned each other on in an S&M sort of way. She even licked his face after they went hand to hand in combat. It may have been a bit kinky but it was consensual.

Unfortunately, things took a turn for the worse when she paired up with the Penguin. Although their goal was to take down Batman, the Penguin had other ideas. It had all too much to do with her costume. When Catwoman refused the Penguin’s sexual advances, he dropped her through a rooftop, taking another of her nine lives.

Why do some men think a woman is asking for it when she expresses herself through her clothes? She has a right to wear whatever she wants. She is allowed to feel confident, desirable, and even sexy. It is never permission for anyone to lay hands on her.

A Cat’s Nine Lives

Somehow, as a woman, Catwoman was expected to fall in line with whatever men wanted. She became Catwoman because a man saw fit to shut her up. She lost her life a second time because a man could not have his way with her.

When does the inanity stop? A woman’s life is hers to live. Her choices are hers alone. Good or bad, leave her to them.

Not everyone gets a chance to start over but Selina got to reinvent herself time and time again. In fact, she was liberated. She was able to let go of society’s expectations and show a side of herself the world had never known. She fell in love. She experimented. It may not have all worked out in the end, but she lived under her own terms. Eight times at least until she walked off into the sunset.
